dont know much about pole fishing mate, the candle wax is so the pole can be broken down in the various lenths easily, stops them sticking

My advice is use quality pole elastic ..hydro elastic is expensive but the best ...use quality line too. Tie your own hooks preferably spade ends and put a small drop of super glue on the knot. I use just 2 elastics white hydro on a match top and black hydro on a power top i never use hooks to nylon i go with the straight through approach of 4lb which has done me fine over the past few years. I only use 3 floats at the most and the preston stotz as shot. where i fish is never much more than 5ft so i don't need many rigs.

Most of all take your time and use your plumb to find features small shelves and dimples in the bottom. You'll find fish right at your feet too ..where does your waste go while your fishing literally under your feet so drop a little now and again about 3 feet from your peg tight into the margin and keep look out for fish feeding there

I have been pole fishing for the past twenty odd years and how it has progressed is amazing. Back in the day i started with an 8 metre fibre pole, it weighed a metric ton and at the "full" 8 metres it bowed like a banana!

These days a good 14 metre pole can be had for a couple of hundred! Best pole i ever had wa sa Garbolino Volante. It was cosmetically brilliant and was very strong and light.

I always used toi double the last few inches of elastic up where it joined the bung, just to give a slightly better chance of landing a whopper that would normally bottom out the standard laggy!

Back when i started no one fished heavy on poles, it was for smallish fish only. How times have changed. Number 6 elastic was seen as "heavy" and i can remember fitting number 8 into my "Silstar Ian Heaps" and getting a few comments about that. At the time number 8 was seen as very heavy.

Todays hydro elastics are amazing and well worth the cash.

I always used a bottom in case of snags and most of the time fished a couple of inches laid on. When i started on the first commercials the pole was a god send. It was impossible to present bait the same way with any other method.

Even had a few good eels with mine..... :victory:

I'd get a pole roller to go behind you and help you unship your pole, i'd also use some sort of lubricant for the elastic. I use Armourall, the stuff you clean your car with. Pour a little down your top kit and it will help it come out the pole tip without "juddering" eg: elastic sticking to the sidewall. I'd also cut your tip back more than you think and fit a bigger bung, for the same reason.

HTH and tight lines.
